Pila (Apple Snail)

SYSTEMATIC POSITION

Pila is commonly known as apple snail. In the Oriental region, it is found in India (except Punjab and Sidh), Burma, Shri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and in the Ethiopian region it is found in Africa, Arabia, and Madagascar. A common species found in North India (except Punjab) is Pila globosa, formerly known as Ampullaria globosa, and in South India P. virens, P. nevililana, and P. theobaldi, however, topics in the present chapter on the study of Pila globosa.
